Although malaria has largely been eliminated in some parts of the world, it appears to be resurging in others. Big Pharm began marketing MalShield throughout Asia. After numerous media reports that malaria was resurging in more and more places worldwide epidemic, the demand for MalShield increased, sales soared, and Big Pharm earned was soon earning record profits. Molina then began receiving disturbing reports from Southeast Asia that in some patients, MalShield had caused psychiatric disturbances, including severe hallucinations, as well as heart and lung problems. Molina was informed that six children in Japan had committed suicide by jumping out of windows after receiving the vaccine. To cover up the story and prevent negative publicity, Molina instructed Big Pharm's partners in Asia to offer cash to the Japanese families whose children had died in exchange for their silence.
