Networking Case Study
Overview and Objectives
This case study allows you to complete a network design, documentation, and implementation project using the skills gained in both the Introduction to Networking and Project Management courses. It is crucial to read and understand the scenario to make sure that all requirements are fulfilled. This scenario guides you through the proper steps to ensure that the project is completed properly.
This case study will require you to accomplish the following tasks:
- Use a Project Management Gantt Chart to analyze and document specific project phases and tasks towards completion.
- Use Microsoft Visio to prepare a topology representing the network design including all listed characteristics.
- Describe each internetworking devices role towards network functionality.
Scenario
You are the network administrator of a new startup company that is planning to build a network consisting of three separateoffices in Nashville. Headquarters is located downtown with two branch offices, one in Brentwood and the other in Smyrna. Each of these locations represents the different LANs within the organization and all locations are connected to each other through a Service Providers T1 leased line WAN link.
- Headquartersof the organization has two networks. Specifically, there is a LAN for management and administrative personnel and a separate LAN for the rest of the employees. Internet access for the company is through the Headquarters network.
- LAN 1 for management and administrative personnel is comprised of eight workstations, a single server for both file and print services, and two networked printers with their own IP addresses.
- LAN 2 for the remaining personnel hosts twelve workstations, a single server for both file and print services, and two networked printers with their own IP addresses.
- The Branch Officesin Brentwood and Smyrna each consists of a single local area network, LAN 3 and LAN 4 respectively. These offices do not have direct Internet access. Brentwood has ten employees and requires a print and file server along with a single networked printer. Smyrna has eight employees and requires a print and file server along with a single networked printer.
Resources
- Use the following blocks of private IP address 192.168.20.0/24, 192.168.21.0/24, 192.168.22.0/24, and 192.168.23.0/24 for your individual LANs.
- Use the following public network IP addresses for your WAN links between Headquarters and the two Branches 200.12.10.0/30 and 200.12.20.0/30.
- Use the network IP address 126.25.25.0 to represent Internet access to the ISP.
- 3 Routers
- 4 Switches
- 4 Servers
- 38 Workstations
- 6 Networked Printers
- CAT 6 cabling
Tasks
Using the above background information and listed resources complete the following tasks:
- Using a Project Management Gantt Chart create a diagram of major phases and tasks needed to complete this project.
- Using the table below provide documentation of your IP Addressing scheme for your proposed network.
- Using Microsoft Visio create a network topology diagram of your proposed network with the following specifications:
- Create and connect all network components.
- Label all devices using appropriate names.
- Label all routers interfaces with IP addresses and subnet masks.
- Label all LANs with their assigned network address and subnet mask.
- Label all end user devices with assigned IP addresses.
- Provide a table listing each of your networking devices used in your topology and describe its responsibility and functionality in the network.
