Nina is a six year old student at Front Royal Elementary. The school has a "field day" in June and hires a nearby petting zoo to come to the field day. Among other attractions, the petting zoo brings two tarantulas, and invites the first and second graders from the school to handle and examine the tarantulas. (Venom from the tarantulas was neutralized in advance). The teacher tells the students that unless they are afraid, they should examine the tarantulas. Nina does so. Tarantulas have tiny hair spikes on the underside of their belly. When sensing danger, they shoot the spikes. Several of these tiny barbed spikes enter Nina's right eye, resulting in severe damage to Nina's right eye.
