NOTES AND COMMENTS 1. It is beter to use the median than the mean as measure of central location when a data set contains extreme values. Another measure that sometimes use when extreme values are pre sont the trimmed mean. The trimmed mean is obtained by deleting a percentage of the small and largest values from a data set and then compoting the mean of the remaining values For example, the 5 trimmed mean is obtained by re imon the smallest 56 and the largest of the data values and then computing the mean of the remaining values. Using the sample yith n = 12 starting salaries, 0.05(12) = 06 Rounding this Value to indicates that the trimmed mean is obtained by removing the smallest data value and the largest data value and then computing the mean of the remaining 10 values. For the starting salary data, the 5t trimmed meanis 3924.50 2. Other commonly used percentiles are the quin tiles (the 20th, 40th, 60th, and 80th percentiles) and the deciles (the 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th 70th, 80th, and 90th percentiles) Exercises Methods 1. Consider a sample with data values of 10, 20, 12, 17, and 16 Compute the mean and median 2. Consider a sample with data values of 10, 20, 21, 17. 16 and 12. Compute the mean and median, Consider the follow C
