Noise Exercise #2 Step 1: Using the app downloaded to your smart phone proceed to your car and sample the noise level of your car radio. DO NOT TOUCH THE DIAL ON YOUR RADIO but instead just turn your key on and measure the dB level from the drivers' seat. Step 2: Next, leaving the radio on, measure the sound pressure level outside the car with the doors closed and windows up on the drivers' side (measure 1foot from window) then roll down the driver's side window and re-measure the sound pressure level from the same spot. Next roll down the passenger side window and re-measure (same spot as previous measurement). Step 3: After measuring the SPL at the drivers' window (roll up passenger side) move away from the window and re-measure SPL at 2 foot, 4 foot and 16 foot. Answer the following: 1) What was the SPL of the radio in the drivers' seat? 2) From the outside with car closed what was the SPL? 3) What was the Noise Reduction measurement? 4) What was the SPL with driver side window down? Both windows down? 5) What impact did rolling the passenger side window down have? Explain the change you noticed. 6) What was the SPL at 2 foot: 4 foot: 16 foot: 7) What is the calculated SPL for: (using distance 1 as 1 foot from window and the SPL you measured as SPLd1, calculate SPLd2 at the following d2). 2 foot: 4 foot: 16 foot: 7) Was the reduction in SPL when doubling the distance always 6 dB for the actual SPL measurement? For the calculated SPL? Why / Why not?
