Introduction

This is a team project. Students will form teams with 3-4 members.

For this course, the team will complete a Course Project plan. Your project will use a hybrid project management methodology, involving both traditional and agile/Scrum elements. Each team in Advanced Project Management (PROJ430) will choose a project topic and develop various documents that are used throughout the project lifecycle. As this is a hybrid project, you will use a traditional project charter to develop the initial scope statement. However, your project scheduling and control should make use the agile/Scrum methodologies using epics, stories, story points, a product backlog, and a sprint backlog. You will use a Microsoft Project schedule for the first three week sprint of your project. Your project should also incorporate agile/Scrum principles in your other plans as applicable to your project. The project documents will be completed and submitted in parts due each week throughout the course. Your Final Project Report will be submitted during Week 8 to describe the completed project and any changes that occurred during the project.

Individual team members will complete peer reviews in Week 8.

Guidelines

The topic you select should be a project that will take between six months to a year to complete. Choose a business or community project topic in which you are interested and have knowledge to make it easier for you to complete these assignments. The ideal project should have some uncertainty regarding detailed requirements, or should require significant learning by the team as they complete the project; in this way, the project will justify the integration of agile/Scrum principles in the overall plan. The project should get all team members involved in experiencing socioculutural difference to some extent to reflect how project teams can use the strengths of differences for the project outcomes and also to resolve any issues due to differences. Daily stand up meetings will probably not be possible. This can be due to the volunteer nature of the project, a remote team whose members live in inconvenient time zones, or other reasons.

The following is a list of sample projects.

• Develop an online ordering application for mobile platforms such as Android or iOS for a Mexican restaurant.
• Develop a hands-on learning curriculum for an elementary school's science course.
• Open a pet hotel in the neighborhood.
• Open a bicycle repair shop in a Jewish community.
• Design and implement a yoga curriculum for a non-English speaking YWCA class.
• Translate a Japanese manga book to English.

The intent of the Course Project is that the project will be sufficiently complex to require consideration of several project management issues. In completing the sample project documents for this course, consider the full breadth of the project work required, but remember that you will develop the details to a lesser depth than would be required in reality.

As a reminder, your project topic must be a business or community project topic. This will allow you to complete all sections of the project. Try to find a project at your workplace or community organization that you can use as a basis for completing these assignments.

You should keep in mind that your project must meet all the following characteristics of a project.

1. A specific and defined objective
2. A defined life span with a definitive start and a definitive end
3. Involving multiple departmental organizations and professional staff members
4. Doing something unique, not having been done before.
5. Justifies a hybrid project management methodology, incorporating both traditional and agile/Scrum methods.
6. Defined schedule, budget, and quality and performance requirements
7. Demonstrate the collaboration of all team members

In the team charter template is a place for a one paragraph description of your project. Your professor may require you to do a different team project if the project your team conceives is too small or otherwise unsuitable. Submit this Team Charter Template to the Week 1 Project Assignment area. For all weeks, on team member submits the document for the entire team. Do not submit multiple copies of the document. This document submitter also makes sure active team members agree to the content of the work that is submitted. This document submitter also makes sure the team knows when the work was submitted. Use this process each week when submitting work to the weekly team project area . Your team should review the Project Management Plan Template as a preview to the work of the remaining weeks. This will help you understand the parts of the project that require traditional and Agile/Scrum methods. This review should also inform the type of project you pick. However, you do not complete any parts of the Project Management Plan Template, nor do you submit it.
