Objective

The objective of this laboratory is to understand the relationship between forces and friction. You will also learn how to measure the coefficient of friction.

Predictions

1. A block of wood sits on a frictional incline with a string attached to the end.The string is strung over a pulley and attached to a hanging mass. Draw force diagrams and explain the possibilities of motion for the system.

1. A motion cart on a horizontal surface is attached by a string to a hanging mass over a pulley. The cart is held motionless and the tension in the string is measured (T₁).The cart is then allowed to accelerate due to the hanging mass and the tension is measured again during the acceleration (T₂). Will one of these tensions be larger or will they be the same size? Explain your reasoning.
