Objective: " To determine the heat capacity of an aluminium block using the method of mixing Apparatus: 1 thermometer, 1 aluminium cube, 1 piece of thread, 1 Bunsen burner wit ha tripod, 1 retort stand and clamp, 1 beaker, a stirrers 1 polystyrene cup, 1 triple-beam balance, 1 measuring cylinder. Procedure: 1. Measure the mass mal of the aluminium block. Immerse the aluminium block into a beaker of hot water and boil it with a Bunsen burner as shown. WP Measure the mass mi of an empty cup and then add about 110 ml of water into the cup. Measure the total mass my of the cup with water. 4 . Put the thermometer into the polystyrene cup and record the initial water temperature Ti. After the beaker of water has boiled for about 3 minutes, quickly transfer the Al block into the polystyrene cup of water with the thread. 5. Gently stir the water in the cup and observe how the temperature of the water varies with time. Record the highest temperature If of the water after the block has been put inside the cup. Precautions: 1 . The aluminium block should be completely immersed in the polystyrene cup of water. 2. After taking out the aluminium from boiling water, it should be put into the polystyrene cup of water as quickly as possible. Data: of empty cup mass of cup with mass of Al block initial water final water m1 / kg water m2 / kg MAI / kg temperature Ti / C temperature Tf / C 0.0 0189 0. 1091 0. 02211 21 23 Result: Given that specific heat capacity of water is 4200 J kg- C-1. Calculate the specific heat capacity c of aluminium. Show your steps clearly. The initial temperature of the metal cube isloo . energy released by the metal cube. E= MCAT= 0. 02211, XX ( 100-23) = 1. 70 2 47 0 energy absorbed by the water = E-m'c'AT' = 0. 10 902 X4200x (23-21)= 915.768 withowe energy loss, = E' 1. 70 247 c = 9 15. 768 c = 5 3 8 J kg -" C-' (3 sig fig2 Discussion: How do the following errors affect your result? 1. Heat capacity of the thermometer and the cup being neglected overestimate underestimate 2. Taking too long to transfer the block overestimate/ underestimate 3. The actual temperature of the boiling water being less than 100 .C 4. (overestimate/ underestimate Some boiling water adhering to the block 5 . overestimate underestimate Cool water splashing out when the block is dropped overestimate underestimate
