OBJECTIVES

This assignment has three objectives:

You are working for No-Leak Construction Ltd., a medium-sized builder operating primarily in

the Lower Mainland. You've recently shown your team an article in Construction Canada (March

2010) about hybrid heating systems and everyone agreed that incorporating such a heating

system into some of the proposals that you are working on, may help you win the contract. The

technology is new enough that not every company will be aware of it, so you could give

yourselves an edge.

Currently, you are putting together a hotly contested proposal for an administrative facility of

about 80,000 square feet as part of the expansion of the dock facilities at the Canadian Navy

Base Esquimalt1. You're wondering what sort of savings a hybrid HVAC system might generate.

The author won't be able to tell you specifically, but perhaps, so you hope, he can tell you about

some of the factors that affect payback so you can do some rough calculations yourself to see

whether it's worth pursuing the idea.

Your boss has raised the issue of the potential difficulty of integrating the installation of such a

system with the construction processes that he is comfortable with and, being a cynic and skeptic

in general, would like to have more information (he called it proof) of the kinds of savings that

such systems can generate in Esquimalt's temperate climate. After all, the article specifies that

hybrid heating systems work best in cold climates.

Also, the military services generally specify systems that are foolproof. The article referred to

equipment failure. Your boss wants to have some stats on the likelihood of such failure and on

the service and maintenance contracts that are offered.

Michael Metcalf's (author) contact information is at the end of the article, so you poke around

his website a bit, but find that it doesn't provide a lot of useful technical specifications. Luckily,

the article (and website) also provides contact information so you can email Michael directly
