Instructions

For this exercise, we'll look at gender and occupations. First, think of as many jobs as you can--at least 10, but more is great. Put all of the occupations in an Excel file or Google Sheet spreadsheet.

Next, rank your occupations from highest to lowest prestige, using the O*Net Occupational Handbook (link) https://www.onetonline.org/ (this is not a perfect way to measure prestige, but the other link is unfortunately down).

• Go to the link above.
• In the "occupation keyword search," type in an occupation (e.g., sociologist; dentist).
• Select the occupation that is the best match.
• Scroll down to "job zone" (about halfway down the page). Record the job zone (1-5, by "Title" in this section) and SVP range (1-9) (last thing in this section).
• In Excel/Google Sheets, type in all the scores, then sort from highest to lowest.

Then, using the Bureau of Labor Statistics records (link) https://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes_nat.htm add the mean hourly wage for all of your occupations to your Excel/Google sheet.

Finally, using U.S. Department of Labor statistics (link) https://www.dol.gov/agencies/wb/data/occupations input the percentage of employees in each occupation who are women.
