oey's friends frequently get caught doing things wrong. About half the time, it's the police arresting them for some new crime or status offense. The rest of the time, it's the system holding them accountable for a supervision rule violation. Most of Joey's friends have court-ordered activities they are not supposed to do and other things they must do, such as: staying sober, drug testing, staying away from other people in trouble, not possessing drugs, not getting into trouble, etc. Each time one of Joey's friends gets taken into the system, they meet new people and come back with new ideas. They also learn that they don't have to stay long in the detention centers, if at all. They often only have to check in with an officer or are put on community supervision with no actual supervision, just a notice that if police have future contact with the offender, they are to notify community corrections about that contact.

Most mothers would discipline (to the point of abuse) the youth when they were caught by police doing something wrong. This was often because when the youth was caught, social services would want to get involved with the family. Social Services would check to see if the living conditions are safe and make sure a sober guardian was in place. This would have a negative impact on the families, as most of the family units have multiple dysfunctional members. With Social Services coming in, there is more possibility of community corrections rule violations being observed, or police being called in for new criminal activity.

Joey and most of his friends do not eat regular meals. They eat as they find something to eat. Most families do not have dinner times. Joey and his friends eat mainly junk food or fast food. They either steal from the convenience store or eat a hamburger at a fast-food restaurant. These diets are high in sugars and carbohydrates.

In school, lots of Joey's friends are considered low functioning. Most of these students do not attend regularly. On the street, they are considered very smart. School is not seen as a way to get out of the neighborhood by many of Joey's friends. Those who succeed do so through selling drugs or other criminal enterprises.

Recidivism is a problem facing the criminal justice system. Individuals continue to commit new crimes despite court sentences. The courts decide sentences or other dispositions about a defendant to change his behavior and deter others' behavior. Those decisions may consider the circumstances of the offender or could be merely arbitrary punishment in hopes of creating a deterrent effect. The central problem with the court's sentencing as a national phenomenon is that 40% + of the persons sentenced for a crime repeat criminal behavior. The challenge is to prevent and reduce crime as well as to reduce recidivism.
