"Old" race cars were very strong, made of steel frames that deformed very little upon impact. However, fatalities among drivers were common. During a crash the driver would be killed or seriously injured, but the car would appear to be undamaged. "Modern" race cars travel many times faster than the older models, but deaths among drivers are now very rare, even if the crashes look spectacularly destructive. Modern cars are quite "fragile"; even minor collisions cause pieces to break away, and in serious crashes the entire car appears to disintegrate. Use the concept of impulse to answer this question: How is it possible for a more "fragile" modern car to be safer during a serious crash, compared to a "stronger" old-style racing car?
