On 2 January 2020 AI Foundation contracted to hire a conference hall for use on 1 April 2020 from the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), as the venture for a lecture entitled "Applying AI in Hospitals in Hong Kong" by Professor Strange, a member of the expert panel of AI Foundation. As required by the contract, AI Foundation had paid $10,000 as deposit. The balance of $30,000 was to be paid before 2 April 2020. However, Professor Strange had contracted Covid-19 around mid-March. AI Foundation cancelled the lecture on 31 March 2020, and all those who had purchased tickets would be given a refund. AI Foundation was of the opinion that the obligation to pay the balance to HKCEC had lapsed with the cancellation of the lecture. Advise HKCEC on whether it has any cause of action against AI Foundation.
