On the Brink As I prepared for surgery at the vet clinic where I now work, I was administering anesthesia to a miniature black poodle when respiration stopped, and the heart stopped beating. I scrambled to the side of the small poodle to start respiration, also giving epinephrine (adrenaline) and dopram trying to get the heart beating again. Not sure what else to do, I yelled frantically for Dr. Erickson, and he came into the room saying, "What is going on in here?" After assessing the situation, he began to assist me in trying to revive the limp, almost lifeless poodle lying on the surgical table. It seemed there was no hope for the small black poodle when a single breath came from its lungs, then another, and another. However, the battle had just begun, for the dog had no heartbeat, but it was breathing. The doctor and I had never seen anything like it before. Often there will be a heartbeat and no breath, but never the other way around. After a few more minutes, we got the dog's heart beating, but the big question then was whether we should go ahead with the exploratory surgery as planned or let the animal come out of anesthesia, in which case it would risk dying from the abdominal swelling. We decided to go ahead with the surgery, trying to save the poor poodle from certain death. As we open the body cavity to find out what was causing the swelling, the uterus expanded and swelled out of the animal's body cavity. We immediately removed the infected uterus, sutured the body cavity, and quickly brought the dog out of anesthesia to observe it for other difficulties. List at least three possible meanings: 6.2 Working Together: Finding the Significance of a Story Instructor's note: A point to your story should feel natural as opposed to being shoehorned in at the end. As you tell your story, a point should emerge. Skillful writers of serious fiction often imply many shades of meaning. Less-experienced writers, though, need to focus on one meaning and make it clear. The following story, "On the Brink," has several possible points, but none that are explicitly stated. What suggestions could you give to the author to clarify a meaning? Read and discuss the model, and then write out three possible points the story could make.
