On the vehicle of your choice research and explain the operation of the VVT, variable lift, Cam Changing or Displacement Changing system in the space provided below. The explanation should include evidence that you have evaluated the system, have developed an understanding and may be able to identify its strengths and weaknesses as compared to other systems.

 

Consider details such as:

• The conditions that must be met for a change? (Speed, load, gear?)
• What the system is targeting? (Economy, emissions, performance?)
• Which cam(s) are involved? (Intake, exhaust, both?)
• The number of degrees of change available.
• Is the system is digital (on - off - standard - advanced) or progressive (any number of degrees)
• How the system is controlled. (Hydraulic, mechanical, electrical?)
• What the control actuators are. (Motors, PWM, duty cycle, on off solenoids?)
• How crankshaft position is determined.
• If and how cam position is determined.
• How crank / cam correlation is determined.
• Information from technical service bulletins.
• Technical drawings and schematics with explanations if beneficial.
• Any other information you deem to be relevant.
