On-campus Tree Sampling - your class (1511L) has gone out to the Quad between Rand-Sarratt, Garland, Calhoun, and Benson to do two tasks: 1) use a dichotomous key to identify trees and 2) take measurements of those trees (the dbh). We have several years' worth of data for the trees in this Quad area. You will take the provided numbers FOR YOUR BAY to address the question: are the trees growing. In the Reading, several concepts related to Basal Area, Relative Density, and I.V., were related. Prior to leaving Lab, you and your Bay should have compiled the data for your Bay (the circumferences), determined the DBH, and then used that information to get a combined value for Basal Area for each tree for only your Bay area. Compare your value for Basal Area to the previous years. This previous years data is on Brightspace. Has there been an increase in Basal Area of the trees within that Bay area? If so (or if not), what may be contributing factors to why one year is different than the other? (you may want to refer back to the Reading 'Procedure; Trees on Campus' for some thoughts)
