One of the "hot topics" in central banking and monetary policy these days is the push for countries to develop and distribute central bank digital currencies (CBDC). In fact, our own Federal Reserve system is actively studying the concept. Your assignment in this forum is to write a short post related to this topic. You don't have to write a lot, but you should locate one or two online sources (and cite them) to answer some of the following questions:
What is a CBDC? How is it different from other "digital currency" systems, such as Bitcoin? How would a "digital" dollar be different from the "regular" dollars that we currently use? Would such a currency perform all of the functions of "money" that we laid out in Chapter 3? Are there any ways that it might not serve well in that role?
What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of such a system?
How would the widespread use of a CBDC affect the process of money creation (as we have discussed it in Chapter 17)?
you don't have to cover all of the points above. In your post, provide a link to your online sources.
