One of the stated goals of affirmative action is to promote diversity in academia and in the workplace in general. Some have argued that diversity cannot be achieved without a critical mass of minority students, faculty or employees and often, such a critical mass cannot be realized without admissions or hiring quotas. However, quotas, it is alleged, inevitably lead to unqualified individuals being admitted or hired.
