One of the ways that benzene is produced on a large scale is the hydrodealkylation of toluene. CH,CH, + H, CH, +CH, A stream of toluene is mixed with a recycle stream and enters a reactor along with a stream of pure hydrogen. The reaction products at 530 C enter a condenser, where they are cooled to 49.0 C. A vapor stream containing ysch, = 0.500 mol CH /mol leaves the process, and a liquid stream containing Xob = 0.810 mol benzene/mol and x6 = 0.190 mol toluene/mol enters a distillation column. The distillate of the column leaves the process at ng = 761.0 mol/h and contains y76 = 0.9500 mol benzene/mol and yn = 0.0500 mol toluene/mol. The bottoms of the column contains X8b = 0.160 mol benzene/mol and x8t = 0.840 mol toluene/mol and is recycled back to the fresh feed. Hydrogen is fed into the process at ni = 2280 mol H./h. This process is carried out at 760 mmHg. n, mol/h Ysh, mol H/mol Ysch, mol CH /mol ysh mol b/mol y's mol t/mol n, mol/h n, mol/h Condenser , mol H./mol Yach, mol CH /mol V mol b/mol ,,mol t/mol y mol b/mol y mol t/mol n, mol H./h Distillation column Reactor n, molt/h n, mol/h n, mol/h * mol b/mol mol t/mol mol b/mol x mol t/mol mol/h * mol b/mol xmol t/mol What are y5b and y5t, the mole fractions of benzene (b) and toluene (t), respectively, in the vapor stream leaving the condenser? Y5b = mol b/mol Yst = mol t/mol What is n2, the flow rate of fresh toluene into the process? n2 = mol t/hr What is ng, the flow rate of the recycle stream? ng = mol/hr What is the single pass percent conversion of toluene in the reactor? single pass percent conversion: %
