One way to follow the progress of technology is to look at the way energy can be delivered to its inventions. For example, the pacemaker had a very short life when it was first introduced. The invention of the first lithium battery revolutionized its development. Now that you have studied electrochemistry and built a galactic cell, you have an understanding of the chemistry involved in the batteries that power our daily lives.

Requirements

1. All batteries have a few things in common. Define electrodes, anode, cathode, oxidation, reduction, and electrolyte.
2. Choose a battery that interests you. This could be one that powers something you use every day, like your computer, or one from the past that allowed the development of a technology that couldnt progress without its invention.
3. Give a brief history of this battery. Who invented it? When was it introduced? What were its first uses?
4. Discuss the chemistry of this battery, including all reactions and the standard cell potential.
5. Include a drawing or download an image of the major components of this battery.
6. If it is still in use, how is this battery used today? What properties make it a good choice for its uses.
7. Respond to at least two other students. Is there anything else that you would like to know about their battery? How does it compare to yours?
8. Check back for comments made on your post to keep the discussion going. Remember that your comments should encourage ongoing discussion from the group. Comments such as Good choice does not stimulate further discussion.
