Online MAT 208 Linear Regression Project

Instructions: In this assignment, you are asked to plot a regression line that models the number of hurricanes that occur each year in the North Atlantic.

The items below provide step-by-step instructions on how to do this using Pearson's StatCrunch website. If you have been doing the online homework for this class on MyLab, then you should also have access to StatCrunch.

You are asked to record your answers to the questions below in a document. Feel free to use a word processor such a Microsoft Word or OpenOffice Writer to create and edit your document. Some items ask you to take screenshots of the StatCrunch website You should paste these screenshots into your document. E-mail your instructor if you don't know how to do this on your device. If you are using a laptop or desktop with a Windows operating system, the Print Screen button on your keyboard should take a screenshot, and pressing Ctrl+ V should paste it into your document.

To turn in the assignment, submit the document to the assignment panel on Canvas. Please note that this assignment counts for a substantial portion of your grade. See the syllabus for details. Feel free to e-mail your instructor if you run into trouble with any of the steps below, or if you have questions on this assignment.

  1. First, load the historical data into StatCrunch. To do this, download the atlantic.hurricanes.csv file from Blackboard. (This file is a comma separated spreadsheet that gives the number of hurricanes that occured each year in the North Atlantic during the years 1851-2018.) Then visit the StatCrunch website at https: //www.statcrunch. com. Go to the MyStatCrunch tab on the website, then click the link "Select a file on my computer" under the "My Data" heading. Load the csy file you just downloaded. After a moment, the data should be displayed in a spreadsheet. In your document, enter the data in Row 19. Then take a screenshot of StatCrunch.
  2. Next, fit a linear regression to line to these data. To do this, move your mouse cursor to the "Stat" menu, then move it down to "Regression", then click the "Simple Linear" entry, A window called Simple Linear Regression should open. In this window, make the year the z-variable, and make the number of hurricanes the y-variable. Then click compute. A new window should open with the results. Take a screenshot of the results.
  3. Using the information in the results window, in particular the Intercept and Slope parameters, give the equation of the regression line. Specifically, enter the equation of the regression line in j= bo + bix form in your document.
  4. Keep the results window open. Enter the r' -value and the p-value of the slope in your document.
  5. Finally, we'll use StatCrunch to graph the data along with the regression line. In bottom-right corner of the results window, you should see a right arrow. Click this arrow. A graph with blue dots and a red regression line should appear. Take a screenshot of the graph.
  6. Write down answers to the following two questions in your document. Based on the graph, the r?-value, and the p-value, do you think the regression line is a good model for the data? If you used the model to predict the number of hurricanes that will occur in the North Atlantic in the year 2020, how confident would you be of this prediction? (Before answering this question, it is highly recommended that you watch the end of the StatQuest video on Linear Regression in the Supplemental Resources section on Blackboard. A link to the video is ht tps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nk2CQITm_eo&t=26m28s.)
  7. You may now close StatCrunch. In your document, write down your thoughts to the next question. How does StatCrunch compare to other software you may have used in the past, such as Excel or OpenOffice Calc?
  8. You have finished the assignment. To turn in this assignment, submit the document to the assignment panel on Canvas. Make sure it includes all the screenshots you took.
