Online platforms like YouTube and Facebook are often blamed for many problems in contemporary mass communication such as facilitating the spread of misinformation, suppressing conservative viewpoints, and creating their own content moderation policies with no government oversight. Because of these perceived crises, politicians on both the right and left have suggested that social media platforms be regulated in ways similar to broadcasting. How might future governments regulate social media platforms? What governmental bodies would do the regulating and what principles used in broadcast regulation (things like the Fairness Doctrine or public interest standard) might be used to regulate platforms?
