5. Silent auctions St. John's Church decides to hold a "silent auction" to raise funds for new choir robes. Parishioners contribute quilts, jars of jam, and other items to the auction. The goods are put on display, with a box beside each item. People put slips of paper into the boxes with their names and the amounts they bid for various items. At the end of the evening, someone reads the winning bids, and the winning bidders pay for the items. All the proceeds go to the choir fund. In several cases, the winning a bidder turns out to be the person who donated the item in the first place. Some people think this is cheating. Next time, they say, there should be a rule that people should not bid on their own contributions. Other people think that there is no need for such rule but that people were stupid to buy their own items. LIC If they were going to do that, why not simply contribute cash to the choir fund? What do you think? ry
