Option One: Some people who commit crimes also have mental health concerns. This can change how the criminal legal system deals with their case in several ways and can change the outcome of their case. Consider some ways that a person accused of committing crimes who also has a mental illness might be treated differently at the following five key points in time:

1) During the crime event, During the investigation: 2) criminal profiling and 3) interviewing/interrogations, 4) During the trial and 5) At sentencing.

This question is marked out of 10 points total. Two points will be allocated to each of the five points in the time listed above. To get the full two points for each, you should:

Identify at least one way the process/approach might be different when dealing with a suspect/defendant/offender with a mental illness; and

Explain why a different process or approach is needed when mental illness is a factor.
