Original Question: We often hear others say, change is hard or change is scary or change is slow to come or change is needed. These clearly are not definitions of change but rather impressions of change. If we are to learn how to lead change, we ought to first understand what change is and how it impacts organizations and those that work within the organization.

How can you engage employees throughout the organization, where you work, to increase their participation within the organization and an organizational change effort? Integrate course text and readings to support your observations and claims.

Initial Post: Change is indeed hard, scary, slow, and needed. This is because change requires a lot of effort since it requires the replacement of patterns of behaviors that are engrained within us. Change is a process of trial and error. However, organizations can ensure that change is done in a strategic way that ensures quality and productivity. A great method to ensure quality change is by applying the total quality management approach discussed by Cumming and Worley (2019, section 12-2b). There are five steps to this approach.

  1. Gain long-term senior management commitment: This is a process of making managers aware that quality and performance does not rely only on employees' abilities but that there also needs to be a system that allows workers to be productive.
  2. Train members in quality methods: Employees need training that may take a few weeks or years to be able to apply methods that ensure success in the workplace. In this training employees will learn how to read diagrams, flow charts, pareto charts etc. They will also learn problem solving skills.
  3. Start quality improvement projects: In this step employees will identify and monitor projects that aim to fix organizational problems and improve productivity. This requires employees to analyze data to get solutions to maintain quality standards and monitor improvements.
  4. Measure progress: This is a process of measuring quality by using benchmarks. Benchmarks are companies that are top in quality in a specific area therefore they can be used as a model to try and replicate in companies.
  5. Rewarding accomplishment: In this step accomplishments that are linked to improvements in the process itself or in the results are rewarded in the company financially. This ensure that employees are continuously seeking to provide and implement plans.
