Overall, these first modules have introduced you to ideas related to learning, broadly; design, and some of its complexities; and technology, and its relationship to pedagogy. This first project gives you a chance to put everything together from this first unit and expand upon it. You can choose how you want to approach this project, focusing on either a (personal) narrative/design, an analysis, or a media production. The unit assessments and their general expectations are described below. Read your options carefully and then choose one option to complete.

Narrative/Design:

You are all experts in something. You might be an incredible tennis player or really good at video games; you might be an excellent cook or writer; you might even be great at skateboarding, or a burgeoning architect or engineer. Reflect on your own personal learning experiences to date. If we shift away from thinking about learning as acquiring knowledge and toward becoming a certain kind of person, describe the critical moments in your learning trajectory, over time, that led you to where you are today.

Analysis:

Choose an "educational app" and analyze its built pedagogyhttps://www.torinmonahan.com/built-pedagogy. We use quotes here, because this is a broad category and isn't neatly contained within the "education" tab, for instance, in an App store. What are the implicit assumptions about learning, including how it happens, how it progresses, how it is assessed and more? Through this analysis, begin to imagine what the designers' beliefs and expectations are about learning and compare this to what you are beginning to believe about learning at this point in the semester.

Media Production:

Produce a podcast/interview (audio or video) with someone who designs software or technology (in any capacity). How do they conceptualize learning? How do they think about who will use their technology and how they can teach them to use that software or technology most effectively?

  • Connections made back to lessons, or readings (or videos, podcasts, etc.), demonstrate understanding of material and adequately support the argument you are making.
  • Prompt is clearly followed (not necessarily word for word, but it is evident that you have understood the prompt and used it as inspiration).
  • Demonstrates some sense of originality, creativity, or genuine engagement with issues at hand.
  • There is a logical flow that supports main points.
  • Writing is clear and well-organized with few typos that do not distract from main points.
