Overview

For this assignment, you are required to complete a presentation using PowerPoint or other presentation software that includes slide notes. Select either Scenario 1 or Scenario 2 below to frame your presentation. The presentation should be at least 12 slides and no more than 15 slides in length. Be sure to include a title slide and a slide for references. The final slide should be your reflective insights and observations about lessons learned from the class.

Scenario 1

You have been asked by a nonprofit organization that represents minorities seeking justice and equality in the workplace to make a presentation about diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Since most of the employees there are African Americans, you are asked to cite historical African-American experiences that make change inevitable.

In your presentation, highlight three to five events from the topic you chose in Week 3. Include any legal battles that changed American society through interaction with blacks in America. Be sure the events covered occurred between 1619 and present day.

Scenario 2

You are a professor working for the Center for African Studies at Hope University. You have been assigned to prepare a presentation to a group of high school students about the African-American experience in the United States from 1619 to the present. These students have been expressing concerns about violence, riots, and social injustice in the country and will appreciate more information on the causes of the anger among African Americans.

In your presentation, highlight three to five events from the theme you chose in Week 3. Include any legal battles that changed American society through interaction with Blacks in America. Be sure the events covered occurred between 1619 and present day.

Draw on what you have learned about events related to your theme, the effects of those historical events on current social issues, and create a presentation in which you:

1. Evaluate the roles and contributions of African-American women and men in the history and culture of the U.S. and the world.
2. Explain the key social forces and legal battles pertinent to African Americans since 1619.
3. Describe African Americans’ experiences in relation to national history.
4. Utilize presentation skills to create a PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes of lessons learned from U.S. historical events.
5. Use five sources to support your writing. Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and valid. Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time within your assignment. For help with research, writing, and citation, access the library or review library guides.
