Overview

Present at least five (5) examples of where (predominantly) tourists have been used as citizen scientists to gather data pertaining to the natural environment they are visiting. Relevant sources must be used to briefly describe each of the examples your group finds.

The purpose of this task is to:

1. Research for the Business Report write up in Assessment 3
2. Work as a group to present original research on citizen science and stakeholder engagement in the host community

The unit learning outcome(s) assessed is/are: 1. Analyse and articulate the roles and relationships of the key stakeholders involved in the sustainable and equitable planning, development and management of diverse destinations; ?

?2.Devise, advocate and justify strategies for sustainable tourism planning and management as applied to different destinations;

?3.Critically reflect on management of the economic, socio-cultural and environmental impacts of tourism to achieve equitable and sustainable outcomes in local and global communities; and,

?4.Critique and evaluate existing practice to current sustainable tourism challenges and work towards designing innovative cultural safe and sustainable solutions and alternatives.

Instructions

1.In order to completethis task, students must first read the following three (3) articles (all provided in VU Collaborate in the "CitSci Project Papers" folder):

1. Is AI a threat to Citizen Science (Australian Museum, 2021)
2. Learning from successful long-term citizen science programs(Hansen and Bonney, 2020)
3. Citizen Science Travel Guide(Intego Travel 2020)

1. The first of these three articles, by the Australian Museum (2021), provides an overview about the increasing use of technology - specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI) - and how it may affect citizen science. It delves into the opportunities, risks and how a range of more sophisticated, high-functioning and complex technologies are influencing and shaping the field of citizen science.

2. The second article illustrates five elements that characterise long-term citizen science program 'success.' The authors recommend that new and emerging projects embed these five principles in their program development, particularly those aiming to generate longitudinal datasets while building motivated, informed and connected communities. The long-term contribution of citizen scientists is increasingly recognised as an important, indeed necessary, contribution to environmental research and policy.

3.The third article/website provides a travel guide that focuses on thesocially conscious tourist. Itdefines 'citizen science travel'and provides four organisations that have projects open to volunteer travelers. Importantly, citizen science travel can also be linked to many of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

2.Students must conduct an online search and find atleast five (5) examplesof where (predominantly) tourists have been used as citizen scientists to gather data pertaining to the natural environment they are visiting. Relevant sources must be used to briefly describe each of the examples you find.

3.In your group now choose a few examples of citizen science that would help with Destination Management. Make sure you keep group minutes of meetings and the allocation of work.

4.Divide the work between the group to present to the class.

5.There will be a Peer Review of Group Presentations using Feedback Fruits worth 5% of the total mark.

Each student will be automatically allocated a peer from a different group to give constructive comments to using thePresentations Feedback Fruits

Once Assessment 2 has been completed, and approved by your lecturer, students may continue with writing the Business Report for Assessment 3.
