Overview
This assignment is preparing you to take the VITA Intake/Interview and Quality Review Exam. This course helps you understand the process used by VITA volunteers. In Module One you learned about the specific volunteer standards of conduct that are used when working with a taxpayer. Each individual taxpayer must be handled with adequate care and attention. Listening and asking questions is critical to ensuring the tax return is accurate and filed correctly. As you gather the relevant information needed for the tax return through the interview process one item you will refer to is Form 13614-C.
This assignment takes place after you have reviewed and adjusted any items during the intake/interview. In other words, the included documentation is accurate and is ready to be input into TaxSlayer Practice Lab. You will practice entering taxpayers' data from samples of Form 13614-C. You will utilize the TaxSlayer Practice Lab to assist with the data entry. This allows you to experience the data entry process and to view the output, which is a PDF of the actual tax return. You will not be required to enter any income or expense data at this point. You will only have to enter the information provided to you on Form 13614-C.
Directions
Use IRS Publication 6744 to locate the Basic Course Scenarios 7, 8 and 9. Basic Test questions are like those in the Advanced Test. These scenarios are relevant to understanding the intake/interview and quality review process. Open the tax documents for each of the three scenarios. Choose one of the three taxpayers to audit. Audit the forms to ensure that all information needed to complete a return is present. Review Form 13614-C, and the additional data acquired during the intake/interview process. Assume that a quality review has been completed. Use only the completed Form 13614-C and Social Security card(s) to enter relevant data into the TaxSlayer Practice Lab. You do not have to enter any income-related items for this assignment. After inputting the data, explain what you would need to complete the interview process and how you would ensure the requirements for a quality review are met.
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
- Explain how to verify taxpayer information by auditing Form 13614-C.
- Explain the process you would use to verify information on the 13614-C.
- Audit your checklist for yes or no.
- Enter the taxpayers data from Form 13614-C into TaxSlayer (submit the output).
- Make a PDF copy of the return from TaxSlayer to submit.
- Note: For this activity there will be no income-related items, only the taxpayer's personal information (i.e., address, DOB, etc.)
- Update areas that appear incorrect.
- Explain what is needed to complete an interview.
- Include any items required for a successful interview.
- Include all VSC (Volunteer Standard of Conduct) required documents
- Include all support required for preparation (I/E W-2, 1099s, supporting paperwork, etc.)
- Describe the requirements to complete a successful quality review.
- Discuss why quality review is important to the process.
- Explain what should not be done during the quality review.
