Pack your bags, get some really comfortable hiking boots, and leave your valuables behind - we are embarking on a Holy Pilgrimage! And off we go!

What is a pilgrimage? Why do people embark upon one? What are some pilgrimages you are familiar with in the world? There are many throughout the world and three of them being of the more popular: The Hajj to Mecca, in Saudi Arabia, the Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain, and the Kumano Kodo in the Wakayama prefecture in Japan.

Rather than tell you what is involved I'm going to let you discover for yourself the richness and joy of a pilgrimage. And to have a chance tell us the Tinder or Match profile for one of our illustrative pilgrims!

Okay - let's start with the physical walk itself. It's roughly 60 miles and with today's roads, byways, etc., it would take roughly 19 hours to walk.

But that's now. Let's think then! The roads would be rough dirt with lots of forests. Poor people would walk, rich people would have donkeys carry them and/or their things.

When you start reading you'll read in line 20:

It happened, in that season, on a day

In Southwark at the Tabard as I lay

Ready to start out on my pilgrimage

To Canterbury, with true, devoted courage...

Now you literature people will recognize Southwark - what most famously is housed there? The Shakespeare Globe theatre! in the footnote on the bottom of page 1114, you'll see a description of Southwark: "A suburb of London, south of the Thames, where theaters, brothels, and other businesses of dubious repute set up shop beyond the reach of the city's laws." If the map below doesn't help, then use Google Maps and enter "Southwark, London" as your starting point, and Canterbury as your ending. You'll get a good idea of the walk.
