Objectives:

This discussion aligns with Learning Outcome 5, and provides an opportunity to think about ethical dilemmas that can affect our professionalism.

Ethical standards are an essential characteristic of the profession. In some cases, helpers and counselors face ethical dilemmas, in which two or more ethical values conflict. In such cases, counselors must reflect on ethical standards and apply an ethical model of decision-making.

Directions:

• Read the information below about our Case Study: Mary and Andrea.
• Carefully review Chapters 3 & 4, and the ACA's Practitioner's Guide for Ethical Decision-Making Download Practitioner's Guide for Ethical Decision-Making.
• Read and understand the ETHIC Model of Decision Making on p. 70-71 in the textbook, and the ACA seven-step, ethical decision-making model.

• Identify and discuss the ethical challenges in the case study of Mary and Andrea.
• Consider some of the ways Mary might have prevented this situation from escalating and discuss some of the ways Mary can handle the situation at this point.
• Consider how the two ethical decision-making models might guide Mary toward the next steps and resolution.
• Consider some of these questions: Should Mary "unfriend" Andrea on social media? Has Mary handled the dinner invitations appropriately? What, if anything, should she do about Caleb's medical school admission? Explain your reasoning.
