In the process it releases a variety of air pollutants such as sulfur dioxide which causes acid rain, particulate matter that exacerbates breathing problems, mercury which causes brain damage, and carbon dioxide which contributes to global climate change.These pollutants also contribute to thousands of premature deaths annually in the US.
