Page 1 of 2 > GENERAL INFORMATION: Each diagnosis homework involves the review of a real individual with mental illness. You will be asked to identify the symptoms present and the functional impairment present for the individual and relate those to the relevant DSM-V diagnosis. When applicable, you will be asked to formulate an understanding of the development and/or maintenance of the symptomology. MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER CASE: The second clinical case is that of an individual with Major Depressive Disorder. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73WEO4npvac&t-611s As you watch the video, think about whether the individual meets criteria for OCD by reviewing the symptoms of the disorder as listed in the DSM-V (see table below). Then, fill out the table by adding specific examples of the person's symptoms for each criteria (if they are present) (50% credit). At times the disorder's criteria may be fully evident, and other times there may be insufficient information provided. Also, provide short written answer(s) to the Models of Abnormality Question(s). DSM-V Diagnostic Criteria A. Five or more of the following A Criteria 1. Depressed mood-indicated by subjective report or observation by others (in children and adolescents, can be irritable mood) 2. Loss of interest or pleasure in almost all activities indicated by subjective report or observation by others 3. Significant (more than 5 percent in a month) unintentional weight loss/gain or decrease/increase in appetite (in children, failure to make expected weight gains) 4. Sleep disturbance (insomnia or hypersomnia) 5. Psychomotor changes (agitation or retardation) severe enough to be observable by others Symptoms present for the individual, as demonstrated with direct quotes or behavioral observations from the interview Page 2 of 2 > 6. Tiredness, fatigue, or low energy, or decreased efficiency with which routine tasks are completed 7. A sense of worthlessness or excessive, inappropriate, or delusional guilt (not merely self-reproach or guilt about being sick) 8. Impaired ability to think, concentrate, or make decisions-indicated by subjective report or observation by others 9. Recurrent thoughts of death (not just fear of dying), suicidal ideation, or suicide attempts B. The symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Models of Abnormality Question(s) 1. 2. The diathesis-stress model suggests that genetic factors create vulnerability for a disorder that may or may not be expressed depending on the individual's level of life stress. In other words, two people may experience the same set of difficult life circumstances, but one may develop mental illness while another will not, depending on their pre-existing vulnerabilities. How does the diathesis-stress model relate to the set of models we have discussed so far (e.g., Biological, Behavioral, Cognitive, and Socio-Cultural models)? (30% credit) How can the diathesis-stress model be used to explain Ms. Mofokeng's Major Depressive Disorder? (20% credit) Page 1 of 2 > GENERAL INFORMATION: Each diagnosis homework involves the review of a real individual with mental illness.
