PARADISE VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE PHY101 - INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICS - LABORATORY METHODS OF MEASUREMENT Equipment Needed: Ruler, tape measure, metric ruler; and spherical, cylindrical, rectangular, or cubical items from your house of sufficient mass that can be weighed on your home bathroom scale (or you may use a kitchen scale for smaller items). Introduction: This laboratory exercise demonstrates basic scientific measurements and how to express data and results in standard scientific form. The "hands-on" portion of the laboratory activity includes determining the density of some common household objects. Objectives: The objectives for this lab are to become familiar with metric units (being able to convert from American units to SI metric units). You will learn how to calculate the density of some common household objects. An additional objective of this lab is learning how to write a lab report and constructing an Excel spreadsheet to display and analyze data. By the end of this lab, you should be able to: 1. Use the SI System and CGS System of units. 2. Convert between various SI units. 3. Measure the volume of various household objects. 4. Calculate the density of various household objects. 5. Construct a dynamic spreadsheet using Microsoft Excel
