Paragraph 1
In this case study, I will be evaluating, The Hard Hat Compliance Problem. In this case study, the newly appointed safety coordinator, of Jimco Construction, encounters a safety issue with employees not continuously wearing their hard hats on the job site. This safety issue can create potentially deadly situations for employees and liability issues for Jim co Construction. The newly appointed safety coordinator would patrol the job site and confront employees that were not in compliance with the hard hat regulations set by the company and insist they adhere to them. Despite the efforts made by the newly appointed safety coordinator to keep employees in compliance with the hard hat company requirement on the job site, the employees continued to take their hard hats off when the safety coordinator left the area.
Paragraph 2
The problem in this case study is that the employees of Jimco Construction are not adhering to the company regulations regarding the wear of hard hats on the job site. Employees that are not wearing hard hats on the job site are putting themselves at risk of serious injury as well as creating potential liability issues for Jimco Construction. Also, when employees are confronted by the safety coordinator about their apparent disregard for the companys hard hat regulation, they will put on their hard hat only while the safety coordinator is present.
Paragraph 3
To try to solve this case study, there are a few alternatives that I would suggest. The first alternative I would suggest is to enforce safety courses and/or seminars for new employees and annual refreshers for seasoned employees. By enforcing safety courses and/or seminars, I believe this would educate the employees of Jimco Construction about why hard hats are so important. During these safety courses and/or seminars, I would highly suggest using real-world scenarios of incidents in which employees have been either injured or saved due to the safety requirement of hard hats on job sites. A second alternative would be to create a condition of employment agreement that makes the companys safety regulations a requirement and if not followed there will be adverse actions. These adverse actions could be like a three-strike policy, on the third strike the employees could be fired or suspended for their noncompliance. By doing this, it would stress not only the importance of safety, but it put some stress on job security as well. A third alternative I would suggest would be to hire an additional safety coordinator to help enforce the hard hat requirement on the job site. By doing this, there would be more eyes on the job site, this could lead to a potential increase in the wearing of hard hats since there would be two safety coordinators patrolling and correcting employees. The last alternative would be to do nothing and hope that overtime the newly appointed safety coordinator will have more of an effect on employees as time goes on.
Paragraph 4
For this case study, I would suggest a combination of the first and second alternatives previously mentioned to solve the hard hat compliance issue. The first solution would be to implement the safety courses and/or seminars of new and seasoned employees. The purpose for these courses is to educate the employees of Jimco Construction on what the company safety regulations are, why they are important, and what happens when they are and are not followed. Educating employees on the importance of safety could potentially lead to a significant increase in the wearing of hard hats. The second solution would be to create a condition of employment that all employees must sign, stating they understand the importance of the company safety regulations and that they must adhere to them, or adverse actions (like the three-strike policy) will be taken. By the creation of a condition of employment regarding the wearing of hard hats, all employees will understand that it is not only a safety requirement but also a possible job security issue. The third alternative mentioned, would prove suffice but this would be a waste of company resources. The fourth alternative, doing nothiIdentify the Presentation of Alternatives in this case study brief.
