Objectives: By the end of this laboratory you should be able to perform the following activities: . Enter Data into an Excel Spreasheet to generate a graph representing a t-test analysis . Enter Data into an Excel Spreasheet to generate a graph representing a One-Way ANOVA analysis . Calculate a t-test using SPSS . Determine the significance of your t-test and make a conclusive statement about your hypothesis . Calculate a One-Way ANOVA using SPSS . Calculate a One-Way ANOVA Post-Hoc Analysis using SPSS . Determine the significance of your One-Way ANOVA and make a conclusive statement about your hypothesis Parametric Statistics are the inferential statistics that you use when your dependent variable is either interval or ratio. The most common types of parametric statistics are t-tests and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Hopefully you still remember from your statistics course that there are several types of t-tests: t-tests for single samples, independent t-tests, and dependent or correlated t-tests. Please see the stats page section on t-tests for a review. T-tests are used when you only have two levels of a single independent variable. If you have three or more levels of your independent variable, or if you have more than one independent variable then you must use an ANOVA for your statistical analysis. The ANOVA analysis can be done with one independent variable (One-Way ANOVA), or 2 or more independent variables (Two-Way ANOVA, Factor Analysis). Please see the stats page section on One-Way ANOVA for a review. For this exercise we will do both an independent group t-test and a One-Way ANOVA. Our investigation involves a new drug to treat the impulsivity of ADHD. Exercise 04A: Conducting an Independent t-test Calculate a t-test using SPSS (Video Lesson CA3a) (YouTube version) For our first experiment, we used 20, five year old students. Ten of the students received a Placebo pill for two weeks and ten used our new drug: NO-IMP for two weeks. At the end of the two weeks all of the children were measured for Impulsive Activity in their classrooms. The final data is presented below. A "1" indicates the group that they were assigned to.Fart Placebo NO-IMF Impulslvlty 1 1 O 10 2 O 1 5 3 1 O 11 4 O 1 3 5 O 1 9 6 1 0 9 7 1 O 15 B 1 O 17 9 O 1 11 1O 1 O 14 11 O 1 4 12 O 1 B 13 1 O 12 14 O 1 S 15 1 O B 16 O 1 1O 17 1 O 14 18 1 O 11 19 O 1 7 20 O 1 5 You can start by using Excel to make a graph of your data (Use the knowledge you gained from Computer Exercise 1 to do this). Once your graph is complete, you are now ready to enter the data into an SPSS spreadsheet When you enter the data you should generate two columns of data. The rst column identies your independent variable and should distinguish the control group from the experimental group. Use a "0" for the control group (the ones that used the placebo) and a "1" for the experimental group. The second column should hold your dependent variable (impulsivity) scores. Once your data is entered go to the Data View window and select "Analyze", "Compare Means", and then "Independent-Samples T-Test". 'IYansfer the dependent variable into the "Test Variable(s)" box. 'IYansfer the independent variable into the "Grouping Variable" section. Next click the "Dene Groups" and enter your codes for the groups in this section. Put the control group or the "0" (without quotes) in group 1 space and a "1" for the experimental group in the group 2 space. Click "Continue" and "0K" to run the analysis. You will get one output table with the descriptive statistics of your two groups. A second output table will show your parametric analysis (the "t" columns shows the t-test value, the "di" shows the degrees of freedon, and the "sig" shows the signicance). Remember that the p value must be less than 0.05 to be signicant. . Remember that the p value must be less than 0.05 to be significant. Now answer the following questions: 1. Can you determine if you t-test is statistically significant? 2. What do you conclude? ****Cut and Paste a copy of your graph, output matrix, and question answers into an MSWord or pdf documentExercise 04B: Conducting a One-Way ANOVA Calculate a One-Way ANOVA using SPSS (Video Lesson CA3b) (YouTube version) Our second experiment is a follow-up to the first experiment. In this case, we used a group of 30, five year old students. Ten of the students received a Placebo pill for two weeks, Ten used a low dose of NO-IMP, and ten used a high dose of NO-IMP for two weeks. At the end of the two weeks all of the children were measured for Impulsive Activity in their classrooms. The final data is presented below (they are organized by condition to make it easier for you). Part Placebo LO NO-IMP HI NO-IMP Impulsivity 10 - oooo oooooo - - oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oooooo o o o o o o o o o o o o o O OO OO OO - - oo oo oo oo oo - - -30 . You can start by using Excel to make a graph of your data . Once your graph is complete, you are now ready to enter the data into an SPSS spreadsheet . When you enter the data you should generate two columns of data. . The first column identifies your independent variable and should distinguish the control group from the experimental group. . Use a "0" for the control group (the ones that used the placebo) and a "1" and a "2" for the two experimental groups respectively. . The second column should hold your dependent variable (impulsivity) scores. . Once your data is entered go to the Data View window and select "Analyze", "Compare Means", and then "One-Way ANOVA". . Transfer the dependent variable into the "Dependent List" box. . Transfer the independent variable into the "Factor" section. . Next click the "Options" to get to the Options box. . Click "Descriptive" and then "Continue". . Next click the "Post-Hoc" to get to the Post-Hoc Analysis box. . Click "Tukey" and then "Continue" and "OK" to run the analysis. . You will get one output table with the descriptive statistics of your two groups. . A second output table will show your parametric One-Way ANOVA analysis (the F ratio). . And a third will show the Post-Hoc analysis (which compares each level of the IV with each other: 1-2, 2-3, 1-3, to see which relationships are significantly different). Now answer the following questions: 1. Can you determine if you One-Way ANOVA is statistically significant? 2 What does the Post-Hoc analysis tell us (which levels are significantly different than the control)? 3. What do you conclude? ****Cut and Paste a copy of your graph, output matrix, and question answers into an MSWord or pdf document
