Parent Organization Background The Fox Islands Electric Co-operative is based at Fox Islands. The organization was established in the region in the year 1974 after the previous company was sold to it. After over a year since the Fox Islands Electric Cooperative had been introduced, it got a loan from the Rural Electrification Administration. The funds enabled the company to grow in the community by establishing a submarine electrical cable that covered a distance of 10 miles. However, since the organization was a T&D company it could only distribute electricity but not generate it. Nevertheless, its energization was first made in 1977. In 2008 the islands faced challenges in regards to the electricity prices in the region. The Fox Islands had been facing the highest electrical bills in the United States. Its electrical bills had been approximated at three times the average of bills at the national level. The impact that the electrical prices had on the island were a threat to the year round's sustainability of the community. The costs of the electricity in the Fox Islands were estimated at 0.29 dollars per kilowatt and were determined by components that included energy and delivery charges
