Part 2 Instructions: Case Study

Now that you have a firm understanding of the vocabulary of communication ethics you will read the following case study, "Money and Friendship," (Neher, 2020). After reading this, answer the corresponding questions paying attention to the word-count requirement.

"Money and Friendship" Case Study:

Kay and Ann, two young women in their late-twenties, have been close friends since they pledged the same sorority in college. They share numerous similar interests and greatly enjoy each other's company. Kay acknowledges to herself that Ann has been a true friend. Ann has listened patiently and responded empathetically on the many occasions Kay sought her out to talk about major issues in her life concerning, for example, job opportunities, or romantic matters. She has provided assistance unselfishly in large and small matters, such as, loaning Kay her car when Kay's broke down, and helping Kay move several times. This is not to say, however, that the friendship has been one-sided. Kay has provided similar kinds of support, encouragement, and assistance to Ann over the years.

Ann, who has cultivated a following on social media for her love of fitness, is trying to build a client base for virtual personal training. Kay is well aware and fully supports it. Several weeks ago, Ann learned of a small retail space in an urban, up and coming area that she can use to build her business.

Recently, Ann has asked Kay to loan her $8,000 for the deposit and first month's rent. The request takes Kay by surprise. Over the years of their friendship, neither Kay nor Ann has asked the other for a loan or even talked about their personal finances. Kay and Ann both grew up in families in which discussion of personal financial issues outside of the family were disapproved of strongly.

Kay, an attorney for a large firm downtown, can afford to loan the money to Ann. She (Kay) is not sure, however, exactly how Ann plans to repay the loan on her salary as a manager of a small local coffee shop. Kay feels uncomfortable about how to discuss this matter with Ann.
