Part 2: The Period of a Mass on a Single Spring 1. We will suspend the short spring and hang a 100-g mass from it. After setting it in motion, the mass will vibrate at a certain frequency. Before watching this video, predict the frequency that it will vibrate with. Note: the mass of the hanger is also vibrating, so it counts as well. 2. Now watch the video of this system and measure the period using the stop watch function of your phone, or another stop watch. Try to do this as accurately as possible. Rehearse the measurements once or twice to get it right. Start your measurement when the mass is at its highest or lowest point. To minimize the error, we will measure a longer time. Instead of timing the mass as it vibrates up and down just once, let it go ten times. Then divide the time measurement by ten to get the period of the mass. Be careful about counting cycles. At the moment when you start your timer, at a maximum or minimum of the motion say "zero.\" Then one cycle later, say \"1." This way only full cycles are measured. 3. Find the percent difference between the predicted value and the experimental period. Part 2: Mass on a Single Spring Spring ID k T (pred) t (10 cycles) T (exp) % Diff
