Part A: Constant Total Mass

  1. Set up the Dynamic Cart Track with a Smart Pulley and accessory photogate timer at its end.Made sure the track is level.
  2. Plugged the photogate into Digital Input 1 in the Signal Interface Box.
  3. Attached a string to the cart that will span the length of the track and suspend a weight hanger over the pulley.
  4. The cart has a mass of 500g. Placed an additional 300g of mass on the cart. While holding the cart at the end of the track, placed a Total weight of 100g on the hanger. (Note that the weight of the hanger is 50g)
  5. Pressed the "RECORD" button and released cart. Clicked on "STOP" button before cart reached end of rail.
  6. Repeated steps 3 through 5 six times, each time removing the mass from the cart in 50g increments and adding it to the hanger.

Part B: Constant Force

  1. The same set-up was used as Part A.
  2. The cart has a mass of 500g.Placed an additional 2000g of mass on the cart. While holding the cart at the end of the track, placed a Total weight of 100g on the hanger. (Note that the weight of the hanger is 50g)

Questions:

(Show Calculations for partial credit)

  1. Plot the data in Part A. Plot Force versus acceleration (both theo. & exp. in one plot using 2 series)
  2. Plot the data in Part B. Plot Force versus acceleration (both theo. & exp. in one plot using 2 series)

ASK if you don't know how to do that.

  1. What is your observations for the plot created in question 1
  2. What is your observations for the plot created in question 2
  3. How does the mass added on the hanger affect the velocity of the cart?
  4. Discuss what is being demonstrated in each part of the experiment.
  5. Discuss the value of the experiment.
