Part A: Do some internet research and list at least five strengths and five weaknesses of both an introvert and an extrovert relating to the workplace.
Part B: Choose which employee you think best suits the situation for each scenario and why.
Dominque: Very outgoing and is energized by being around other people or large groups of people, speaks well in front of others, is highly sociable, is action-oriented, great at remembering names and faces, and is determined minded. He is also unable to make un-emotional decisions, may not have the best judgment, and sometimes struggles to concentrate. Although he does not have a college degree, he has a way with people and aims to climb to the top!
Jules: Thinks things through before speaking, is a good observer, interested in self-knowledge, enjoys small/close groups of people but needs time alone to re-energize. She is team-oriented, strives to please others, is self-motivated, but is very sensitive, can be stand-offish, and can be upset by last-minute changes and surprises. Jules is a college-educated scholar that wants to excel but does not like the public lime-light.
Situation A: You are the manager of a sporting goods store and are working with your staff, brainstorming on ways to showcase a new shoe that is about to hit the market. The shoe is pricey, ut of good quality so you are unsure of the need to push it too hard but also don't want it being overlooked as you have a huge shipment of them coming in. It's basketball season and all the students at the local schools are on a hunt for the newest and coolest shoe, but of course, the parents do not want to spend an arm and a leg for "fashion". Some of the team members suggest setting up a booth and staffing it with employees throughout the day to speak with people and get them to try the shoe on in hopes they will fall in love with it the second they try it on. Others suggest creating flyers and handing them out to customers as they walk into the store and passing them around town at the local grocery market, schools or even the parks.
Who is your choice for this situation and what would you have the team do for the promotion?
Situation B: A highly respected and well-known entrepreneur is coming into town and had their assistant call the hotel you manage to ask for rates and availability. You are thrilled at the possibility of having this person be a guest of your hotel so so you feel the need to step up the service a bit. You feel extra training should help the staff but do not want to offend some of the staff that could use a little "polishing up". Your other option would be to schedule your sharpest staff for the days the guest will be in and hope for the best. As a manager you want the guests to enjoy their experiences not only at the hotel but also around town, therefore, you need staff that is outgoing, friendly, and knows the happening places in town.
