Epithelial Tissue The term "histology\" refers to the study of tissues structure, anatomy, and role within the body. Epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous these are four main types of tissues. Epithelial tissue has two major functions: covering and lining the outside of the body and the Inside of hollow organs body cavities and ducts and, also, forming glands. Further, epithelial tissue allows molecules and nutrients to move from one location to another by processes such as diffusion, ltration, secretion came-cam; and absorption while protecting organs and structures. .4 Their shape and the number of layers serve to categorize epithelial cells, and they can be comprised of the following shapes squamous (attened), cuboidal (cube), and columnar (rectangular 8 or column-like). Further, some epithelial cells that changed shape are called transitional epithelial 9 cells, such as biadder celts that change from cuboidal when the bladder is empty to squamous, when 10 the bladder is full. Simple epithelial cells are a single layer however those that are stratied occur in 11 multiple layers. LikeWise, pseudostretied cells appear to be stratified, but they are really a single 12 layer. Microwlli and cilia are extra surface structures, which some epithelial cells have. As such, 13 microvilli serve to increase surface area for absorption of nutrients in the small intestine and cilia in 14 the upper airways help to move mucus up and out of the respiratory tract. 15 Since epithelial cells cover and lined surfaces and cavities of the body and glands, each cells side 15 has different functions. Their specific function depends on whether the side of the cell is facing the 17 surface or cawty (apical side) or if it is in contact with the basement membrane (basolateral side). 18 Epithelial tissue is avascutar, meaning that is does not have any btood vessels, so old cells can be 19 shed without causing bleeding. Epithelial cells are also highly connected by venous junctions and 20 desmcsomes. The cellularjunctions mean that epithelial tissues are strongly held together; likewise, 21 they can transfer signaling molecules that allow the cells to function as a unit (i e. a tissue). Because 22 of the location and the role of epitheliai tissue these cells undergo the most rapid cell cycle in the 23 body, and therefore, new cells are formed daily. 24
