Respond to the 2 peer's work post below with positive feedback with a minimum of 5 sentences for each one. The responses should be fully detailed and professional.
Peer Work Post 1:
If I were a therapist and I used a dated term and accidentally offended a client, I'd be the first to reach out about it. Even if my client was not directly vocal about their displeasure, I'd correct myself and explain my mistake anyways. Some language is offensive to some people, but it may not be offensive to another group of people. However, that is not an excuse to flippantly use dated language, knowing that it could bring harm to someone. I would mention that I am also still educating myself and that I didn't mean to hurt them in the way that I did. Language and terminology changes and evolves with time. If my client is still upset with me, I would offer to transfer them to another therapist and sever our current ties. I wouldn't want my client to work with someone who they've felt hurt by, even if I promised not to make the same mistake again. The damage had already been done. Lastly, I'd ask for their thoughts and opinions on any further reparations I could make. Even if I cannot take back what I said, I could still try to make their future experiences better, even if they are not with me.
Peer Work Post 2:
Language is ever evolving and I am always trying to keep up with the modern terminology. Although I am only 30 years old, I find it hard to keep up with my 25 year old friends and their terms. I can only imagine from a personal perspective, how important it would be for a therapist to stay up to date on appropriate terminology and language in today's world. It is essential that a healthcare provider is up to date on these things to avoid offended a client or possibly triggering them. Social media, the internet, and training workshops are important in staying informed with appropriate language. I also think its important to ask questions when we may not understand what someone is referring to specifically, and keep an open mind to new terminology.
