Peer Work Post 1:

Of the various theories of the origins of paraphiliac behavior, which one makes the most sense to you?

The paraphiliac behavior that makes most sense to me are those that have cultural impact and influence with human cognitive capacity.Without a doubt, I believe culture is an important and common factor that would impact the behavior of ones paraphiliac desire. The cultural impacts could be as a result of a memory stored from that they once experienced or saw for themselves. This could also be caused to a paraphiliac behavior beginning at a younger age, either by continuously thinking about the sexual act or possibly experiencing it. Although I believe cultural impact can influence paraphiliac behavior, another theory that makes the most sense to me is both psychological and biological factors.

Why is "paraphilia" problematic language?

The meaning of paraphilia is a specific sexual fantasy, activity, or interest that becomes a focus of intense sexual fantasy or behavior but causes distress or dysfunction for an individual. (Tye, 2021, p. 493). This term is often used when a person has unusual sexual desires that are our of the "norm". With that being said, I think this word can be problematic because it sort of already leans more towards something negative or frowned upon. I think when others hear people talk about their sexual desires, they automatically assume that it is something inappropriate hat they desire sexually.
