Speaking with confidence
COLLAPSE
Public speaking confidence can be influenced by various factors, both personal and contextual. Personally, factors affecting my confidence include the audience's familiarity, the complexity of the topic, and my preparation level. If I sense a lack of expertise in the subject or anticipate tough questions, nervousness tends to creep in. The formality of the setting and the size of the audience also play roles, as larger audiences or more formal settings can heighten anxiety.
From course materials, I've learned that factors impacting confidence often involve communication skills, body language, and preparation. Effective communication, clear execution of the points that I am trying to make, and a well-structured message contribute to confidence. Non-verbal cues like maintaining eye contact and using assertive body language also play a crucial role in appearing confident to an audience.
As a speaker, I go back and forth between a being confident and also being in a nervous state depending on the factors i mentioned before. Improving confidence involves refining communication skills, engaging in thorough research, and practicing my delivery. Developing a comprehensive understanding of the topic also boosts confidence, as does familiarity with the audience. I remember being asked to talk about my military service to a group of people. I said yes without hesitation only to find that my audience was not very supportive of the war that was going on. Although I understood my topic, a hostile audience made it very difficult.
To enhance my confidence, I plan to invest more time in refining my public speaking skills, engaging in mock presentations, and seeking constructive feedback. Incorporating relaxation techniques, such as controlled breathing, can help manage nervousness. Embracing a positive mind set and viewing public speaking as an opportunity for growth rather than a source of anxiety is essential.
