When it comes to omissions, two remedies for this potential problem are refining scope and WBS (Work Breakdown Structure), and making checklists, template, and playing devil's advocate. Having structure and a clear plan in place will denitely help a project manager stay on top of their duration estimation. Two methods for dealing with general uncertainties in the estimate are facilitating the rolling wave plan (finishing one part of the project and having every detail of the next planned) and learning curves (the quicker you work, the more you get done.) For common cause variations, you may use the PERT (program evaluation and review technique) method or the Monte Carlo simulation. PERT is just a concept used to explain that different individuals' tasks may affect the overall duration of time. The Monte Carlo simulation is a computerized mathematical technique that allows people to account for risk in quantitative analysis and decision making.
