Perhaps nothing is more globalized today than the international knowledge structure. Companies and countries try very hard to monetize or control the flow of information. The West is dominated by a bias in the direction of information freedom with little regulation. Meanwhile, various views on the importance of intellectual property and its protection cause tension between information originators/owners and those who would exploit access to that information. When the pandemic gave rise to gross vaccine inequality, developing countries wanted drug companies to hand over their intellectual propertyvaccine recipes worth billions-- for the public good.

(2) the drug companies are businesses which are entitled to receive the returns on their investment.
