Pervaporation is going to be used to separate ethyl acetate (EA) from water. The
Feed rate is 100,000 gal/day of water containing 2.0% wt EA at 30\deg C and 20 psia. The
membrane is made of polydimethylsiloxane with 1m skin thickness in a spiral wound module
which approaches a cross flow. The permeate pressure is 3 cmHg. The total flux of the membrane
measured at these conditions is 1.0 L/m2
-h and a separation factor of 100 for EA with respect to water.
A retention of 0.2% wt is desired. of EA for a permeate of 45.7% wt. from EA. Determine the area
required membrane in m2 and estimate the temperature drop of the food.
