Peter was on holiday at a game lodge with his pet dog, Nero. One night at the game lodge, there was no power due to loadshedding and Peter decides to light the candles that are provided in his chalet. One of the candles that he lights is near an open window, where a light wind is blowing the curtains to and fro near the candle. Suddenly, a cat jumps up on the windowsill. Nero jumps up on a couch to go after the cat. Peter grabs Nero to stop the dog from going after the cat but Nero moves at such a speed that he pulls Peter, who then knocks over the candle and the candle in turn sets the curtains and the whole cabin alight. Peter and Nero are able to escape the burning chalet unharmed but the game lodge wants to charge Peter with the crime of arson. With reference to causation, write a note not exceeding one (1) page in which you explain the theory of adequate causation in relation to Peter's situation and, as part of your answer, explain The Independent Institute of Education (Pty) Ltd 2021 Page 5 of 6 18; 19; 20; 21 2021 whether Peter could be held to have legally caused the chalet to burn down in this regard with reference to this theory. NOTE: 15 marks are to be awarded for your explanation and 5 marks are to be awarded for the manner in which you structure your answer to this question. Your answer to this question must not exceed one (1) page in length. Remember that any writing exceeding the page limit will not marked by your lecturer
