Physics 103 Fall 2021 Quantum Mechanics Lab Project Quantum mechanics has completely revolutionized how we think about our Universe and how it works on the smallest of scales. The behavior of quantum systems is like nothing that we have any experience with, and the formulation of the laws to describe these systems has been forced upon us from the results of experiments. In this lab you will choose a simulated experiment having to do with quantum mechanics and investigate it. Go to the Phet Quantum Mechanics website https://phet . colorado. edu/en/simulations/filter?subjects=quantum-phenomena& sort=alpha&view=grid select your favorite simulation, and play around with it. Use that simulation to design and perform your own virtual experiment on a quantum-mechanical system, and then report on the results of that experiment. While the experiment is done virtually via simulation, you should treat this experiment as though you were actually doing it, and include all the relevant experimental discussions that you would include in a standard lab report. For this lab project you should do the following: . Review the history and the theory of whatever topic you choose. Discuss the relevant ideas and equations that describe it, including any derivations that you may need. This can be your Introduction section, or your Theoretical Background section, or whatever you want to call it. . Discuss your experiment, as you've designed it using the simulation. What is is that you're trying to measure? Why should we care about this experiment - why is this thing important? This should be something definite, and not just "Investigations of a Quantum System," or something broad like that. . Make your measurements, tabulate whatever results you have, and draw some conclu sions. Is there any error analysis that you need to do? Are there any statistics that you need to run on your experiment? . How did your experimental results compare to theory? What do you conclude about the system? Once again, I repeat the usual stuff! Is this the best report that you can do? I've made comments on previous reports - did you address those concerns? The point of this project is to get you used to doing a little research on something, and learning to write it up in a professional way. You'll be graded on the effort that you put into the writeup, and the quality of the writeup, itself (I assume that you actually get the correct solutions!). Some of the things that I am looking for:a Did you follow the correct format for the formal lab write up is it in BM? Are all the group members listed {alphabetically}? Did you write in complete sentences, with good grammar? Did you write things in paragraphs, instead of making lists, and so on? In other words, does the write up look professional - would it be something that you would proudly submit for publication in a real journal? a Did you actually discuss things, instead of just showing a page of calculations? Imagine that you're giving a lecture on this stuff, and type that up! Look at real papers, and how much writing there is, compared to the amount of math! a Did you only write things that you can understand, and write at a level at which any classmate could Imderstand? It's tempting to include scary-looking equations in your paper because they look impressive - and you can! However, if you're including these scary equations, be sure that you imder'stcnd them, and can explain theml a "When including equations and formulae, did you dene your variables? Don't display equations without telling the reader what the variables are! Also, are the important equations numbered? Do the equations look nice on the page {as they would look in a textbook, or when you're writing them down), or are they messily just stuck there [i.e., do you write otg, or 1;\"? at\"? - see how much better one looks than the other? ]? I Did you cite your sources, and list them in the references section? "Were you sure to not simply copy and paste stuff from the internet {that's plagiarism, and gets you kicked out of science\"? a Look at real papers to see how its done! This list of stuff isn't just for this write-up, of course - it applies to all the labs that we're performing, as well as to your research paper! The whole point of all this is to learn to write technical documents, which is much more important to your future careers than any particular lab that we're going to do
